SPA is excited to announce that the 2008 LIFE Awards, in conjunction with International World Suicide Prevention Day 2008, will be held in Brisbane in September this year.

The LIFE Awards recognise the outstanding contribution to suicide prevention in Australia through the following categories:
Business and Industry Award
SPA recognises the vital role that business and industry can play in promoting healthy workplaces as well as in putting in place strategies that support employees and families in addressing issues of mental health and suicide.
This award category recognises business and industry, of any size or activity that have taken action to put such strategies in place.
Healthy Communities Award
The role of the community and community organisations through creating greater awareness, education and training and post vention as well as promoting healthy communities is well acknowledged.
This award is designed to recognise those groups or individuals who have contributed through their work at the local level.
Indigenous Award
This category identifies the unique and creative health program, service partnership or individual that has encompassed the holistic and social view of health, e.g. physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual well being of Indigenous individuals and communities in promoting suicide prevention.
The award nominees and recipient must be Indigenous.
Media Award – Print
SPA recognises the important role media has in representing, promoting and informing critical health and welfare issues to the Australian community.
This responsibility is no greater than in the domain of suicide prevention.
This award will recognise an organisation or individual within the field of print media who has assisted or provided effective and accurate delivery of information on suicide and suicide prevention and through that reporting assisted in progressing awareness and education in suicide prevention.
Media Award – non-Print
SPA recognises the important role that the broadcast media, whether television, radio, or via the internet, has in representing, promoting and informing critical health and welfare issues to the Australian community. This responsibility is no greater than in the domain of suicide prevention.
This award will recognise an organisation or individual within the field of non -print media who has assisted or provided effective and accurate delivery of information on suicide and suicide prevention and through that reporting assisted in progressing awareness and education in suicide prevention.
Public Sector Award
SPA recognises the important role Local, State, Territory and National Governments as significant employers and in their contribution to supporting community, business and industry as well as research and the service sector in promoting awareness, education and information on suicide and suicide prevention.
This award recognises special contribution and achievement by the public sector.
Youth Award
The young people of Australia are our future.
This award category recognises those individuals, groups or organisations that have made a significant contribution to suicide prevention and early intervention among young Australians.
Lifetime Research Award
This is awarded to an organisation, group or individual who has made a distinguished contribution to research on suicide prevention over an extensive career.
Research provides the essential knowledge for, and is a vital tool in developing effective practices to address factors associated with risk and to effectively respond to the needs of individuals.
Emerging Research Award
This is awarded to an organisation, group or individual who are in their early career as a researcher and have been judged to have been producing research of an excellent standard within suicide prevention.

The closing date for the 2008 LIFE Awards is Friday 22nd August.
This year, the venue for the ceremony is the stunning Rooftop Terrace at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Situated on the waterfront with amazing views of the city lights, the Rooftop Terrace will be a fantastic venue for the ceremony, and will continue to uphold the reputation of the event, being highly reputable and prestigious.
This event is invitation only.
In previous years the successful and prestigious national awards ceremony has been held in Federation Square, Melbourne and Government House in Sydney.
