About

The past years have seen an unprecedented rise in the amount of men presenting with mental health distress. Male mental health has become one of the key issues in suicide prevention and mental health.

This webinar will investigate the unique challenges of male suicide prevention, bringing a national and global perspective to one of the biggest issues in suicide prevention and mental health. Our speakers will explore what the evidence is to inform our practice in the prevention of male suicide.

Register today to hear from our dynamic line-up of expert speakers, including:

  • Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, The University of Newcastle
  • Dr Zac Seidler, Director of Mental Health Training, Movember & Research Fellow, Orygen
  • Brendan Maher, Global Director, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Movember Foundation
  • Marc Bryant, Business Development Manager, LivingWorks Australia

Speakers

Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, The University of Newcastle

Frances is currently in a temporary role as Acting Pro-Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation, at the University of Newcastle. She is taking a leave of absence from her role as NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, Director of Technology, Innovation, and Translation at the NHMRC PREMISE Centre for Research Excellence, and Co-Director of the Mental Health Hub of the University of Newcastle’s Priority Research Centre in Brain and Mental Health while in the Acting PVC role. She leads an international team of researchers, clinicians and industry partners in the innovative development and translation of evidence-based treatments for comorbid mental and physical disorders. This involves developing clinically safe and efficacious interventions, conducting controlled research to better understand how these interventions translate into clinical practice and general population settings, and linking with basic scientists to better understand the key mechanisms and components of change for these interventions for different patient groups at different stages of disorder. She is the current President of the Society for Mental Health Research (the peak body for mental health research in Australia and New Zealand) and the immediate past-President of the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions (the peak international body for research on technology and health). She also serves on the Million Minds Mission Advisory Panel, and the National Mental Health Commission Research Strategy.

Dr Zac Seidler: Director of Mental Health Training, Movember, Research Fellow, Orygen

Dr. Seidler is a Clinical Psychologist, the Director of Mental Health Training at Movember and a Research Fellow with Orygen at The University of Melbourne. Zac has devoted the past 5 years to the goal of reducing the staggering male suicide rate, treating and researching men’s mental health with over 25 peer-reviewed articles published. Zac has worked clinically with men of different ages and presentations from adolescents with early psychosis to older HIV+ men struggling with adjustment. Currently, Zac is creating the world’s first online program to train mental health professionals in how to better understand and respond to men’s distress.

Brendan Maher: Global Director, Mental Health & Suicide Prevention, Movember

Brendan Maher is the Global Director, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention at Movember. He joined the organisation in May 2019 and leads a passionate, responsive, and dynamic global team working to prevent suicide and achieve better mental health outcomes for men.

Brendan is also a Board Member and former CEO of R U OK? in Australia – an organisation most well known for R U OK?Day, a national day of action committed to encouraging and equipping everyone to regularly and meaningfully ask “are you ok?”, of anyone who might be struggling with life.

Brendan is a passionate advocate for suicide prevention with almost 12 years senior leadership experience across Lifeline Australia, R U OK? and Movember. His contribution to the sector was recognised in 2019 with Suicide Prevention Australia’s LIFE Award for Excellence in Leadership.
