The Department of Health has a diverse set of responsibilities, but throughout there is a common purpose, which is reflected in our Vision statement:
Better health and wellbeing for all Australians, now and for future generations. We aim to achieve our Vision through strengthening evidence-based policy advice, improving program management, research, regulation and partnerships with other government agencies, consumers and stakeholders.
StandBy is Australia’s leading provider of support after suicide, established in 2002 to respond to the need for a coordinated community response to suicide.
StandBy is dedicated to assisting anyone bereaved or impacted by suicide, including families, friends, workplaces, schools, community groups, frontline responders and witnesses.
People impacted by suicide are up to eight times more likely to take their own lives, but with the appropriate support their risk of suicidality can be reduced.
StandBy provides free face-to-face and telephone support at any stage, no matter when or where the suicide occurred. Support is delivered by local team members who listen to the individual’s story and connect them to the most appropriate support in their local area. Follow-up contact is continued for 12 months to provide ongoing support when needed.
An independent evaluation found people who accessed StandBy support within 12 months of their loss were significantly less likely to:
- be at risk of suicide (25%)
- report experiencing mental health concerns (36%)
- experience social isolation or a loss of social connections (22%)
StandBy is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program and is currently delivered by partner organizations in eleven Primary Health Network (PHN) regions. By collaborating with partner organisations, the support model is developed to be responsive to the individual needs of the local community.
The program delivers education sessions to increase awareness of suicide and suicide bereavement and provides locally tailored workshops that bring together community members to develop connections and build the community’s capacity to respond to suicide and support those impacted.
StandBy engages the contribution of people with lived experience and continually develops its evidence-based approach with the latest research.
