A new report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that 2535 Australians died by suicide in 2012. This is the highest annual number of suicide deaths over the past decade and overall suicide rates are showing no signs of decline. Suicide is a mostly preventable yet it is now the leading cause of death for both Australian males and females aged 15-44 years. SPA calls on the Australian Government to immediately release new funds under the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. The existing uncertainty is hindering the ability of the sector to provide support to those touched by suicide. The new statistics released today highlight that this is no time to be complacent.
