After many months of consultation and collaboration with our members, stakeholders, and experts in workplace suicide prevention, we have officially launched Suicide Prevention: A Competency Framework.
The framework is designed to enhance and build confidence for organisations and employees to respond to people experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours at work. It is informed by, and brings together, experts in workplace suicide prevention and training.
This is an important starting point for employers and staff to identify gaps in the workplace when it comes to induction, education, training and most importantly the support and wellbeing of their staff. There are suggestions on ways to adapt, tailor and apply the framework to different working environments and roles.
Recognising the early warning signs and then responding appropriately is a critical part of suicide prevention. It is our hope that with this new framework, we can encourage more workplaces to facilitate these conversations, reduce the stigma, and ultimately prevent deaths by suicide.
If an organisation is unsure on how to implement the framework in their workplace or wishes to discuss any aspects of the report, please contact Suicide Prevention Australia on qip@suicidepreventionaust.org or phone: 02 9262 1130.
