Improving Support for LGBTIQ Suicidal Behaviour: Insight from Lived Experience

Funded by the Suicide Prevention Research Fund, hear from Professor Katherine Johnson and Dr Vanessa Lee-Ah Mat discuss their study “Improving support for LGBTIQ suicidal behaviour: insight from lived experience”.   Their research included the shared experience of First Nations LGBTIQA+ people, “Queer people of colour”, and other LGBTIQA+ people, and looked at how we can improve support for people experiencing suicidal distress, especially in cases of intersectionality. This webinar will broadly overview the research itself, with a strong focus on the practical implication for service delivery and will include some resources that have been developed as a result.  The webinar has been designed to introduce the latest research in suicide prevention and help everyday practitioners think about how to apply that research in the field.  Expected Audience: people engaged with policy, frontline service delivery for LGBTIQA+ people, and especially for First Nations LGBTIQA+ people, and “Queer People of colour”  Comms might target program and service delivery to LGBTIQ, First Nations, and CALD.  Research Translation Webinars are designed to introduce the latest research in suicide prevention, and help everyday practitioners think about how to apply that research in the field.

Online Workshop: What works when supporting men?

REGISTER HERE Doing It Tough is excited to host its first online workshop ‘what works when supporting men?’ The free, 1.5 hour workshop will explore best practices in non-clinical male support pathways with opportunities to hear from service providers, ask questions, and share your learnings. This will build on the Australian Mens Health Forum (AMHF) resource ‘Making services work for men’ with a specific focus on suicide prevention initiatives in the following areas: promotion, structure and culture. The workshop will be hosted by Glen Poole, CEO of AMHF, and will include a panel discussion from expert non-clinical support services that focus on male suicide prevention. The panel discussion speakers include: Bruno Efoti, Founder of Tradies inSight Brad Parker, New South Wales CEO at MATES Tim Hewson, Founder of Mongrels Men Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss their own learnings in dedicated breakout rooms, where all information will be collected and developed into a key learnings resource. There will also be time for a Q&A with the panel speakers. Funded by NSW Health, Doing It Tough is a partnership between Suicide Prevention Australia and Australian Men’s Health Forum. REGISTER HERE

Launch of the Hanging Rock Water Tanks Mural Project, Batemans Bay NSW

Hanging Rock Sporting Complex Beach Rd, Batemans Bay, NSW, Australia

All community members are warmly invited to attend the launch of the Hanging Rock Water Tanks Mural Project on Friday 19 April at 3pm. The murals will serve as an enduring reminder to have conversations around mental health and suicide prevention, especially with young people. This location will become a place where events with a goal to raise awareness; education on self-care and support; and reducing suicide in our community can take place. The realisation of this community project is thanks to the vision and dedication of Deanne and Pat Griffin in tribute to their son, Sean. Members of the Bega Valley Eurobodalla Suicide Prevention Collaborative are working with Deanne and Pat to plan and deliver the murals and the launch event.
