Champions for Life: Marathon in memory of a brother

7 November 2017

Champions for Life, Sarah and Sophie recently completed the half marathon at the Melbourne Marathon Festival and raised funds in support of suicide prevention initiatives in memory of Sarah’s beloved brother, Dan.

“It was a huge and totally unexpected shock to our whole family and our friends when we lost my brother to suicide early last year. It made me realise how important it is to be aware that the people close to us may be suffering. There is so much work to be done to prevent this from happening to others.

Sophie and I decided to compete in the Melbourne Half Marathon this year to raise awareness and funds for Suicide Prevention Australia because I feel it is such a worthy cause and there is still a great need to reduce the stigma around suicide. I know what it’s like to lose a loved one and I want to try to help in any way I can so that other people don't have to go through this.

Our fundraising experience has been really successful, and the highlight of my experience was seeing just how generous family and friends have been with donations. I’m extremely grateful for their generosity, and I hope to keep raising funds.

I strongly encourage others to fundraise in support of suicide prevention initiatives. It’s so simple to do. The team at SPA are very supportive, and funds will go towards the achievement of a meaningful reduction in suicides in Australia.”
