Media Release – SPA CEO on Ice Taskforce Report

6 December 2015

Suicide Prevention Australia welcomes the release of the Final Report of the National Ice Taskforce by Prime Minister the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP and suggests Government look to this model to inform suicide prevention.

“Investing in research, data and online support for those touched by the devastating effects of ice addiction is a welcome move by Government,” Suicide Prevention Australia CEO Sue Murray said today.

“Addiction is often a sign of complex underlying issues that are impacting an individual’s health and wellbeing, as well as those around them. There are strong links between suicidal behaviour and drug use, so we must work to ensure these services and support are linked to the suicide prevention priorities expected in the 5th National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan.”

“As with all services moving to Primary Health Networks (PHNs), it is essential that there is national leadership and an appropriately resourced workforce. A framework for nationally accredited training will enable informed, safe and consistent responses to treatment for complex individual issues.”
