SPA calls for more support for those in detention – final media release

Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) urges the government to take further action on refugee suicide prevention recommendations.

Reports this week of multiple suicide attempts by detainee mothers on Christmas Island sadly highlights the ongoing failures by our government to embed appropriate suicide prevention support and services for our refugee community impacted by detention. 

CEO Sue Murray said, “SPA as a peak body and alongside members of our National Coalition for Suicide Prevention have consistently raised issues surrounding suicide prevention for refugee detainees, including support for the 2013 Ombudsman’s Report recommendations in this area.
