SPA CEO on 20th anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report

23 May 2017

This week marks 20 years since the tabling of the ‘Bringing Them Home’ Report, the result of a national inquiry by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission that heard from approximately 1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and extensively documented the experiences of Stolen Generations. This morning our friends at The Healing Foundation launched a report on how far we've come in the past 20 years and presents an action plan for healing

We know from our Lived Experience Network members that acknowledging the pain and suffering that informs our personal experiences is invaluable. Today, and every day, I stand with my colleagues and friends to both recognise the trauma held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities and seek to understand how we can best support healing.

I share with you the words of SPA Ambassador Professor Tom Calma AO, “As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person I call on all Australians to really understand our history. Understand the atrocities that took place. And support our Stolen Generations.”
