The uncertainty of funding of vital work being done to respond to and prevent suicide in communities across has caused deep unease in the sector.
For months now, SPA has stood alongside colleagues such as Mental Health Australia and SANE Australia to call on the Australian Government to confirm funding arrangements as a matter of urgency. As I said on the release of the latest ABS Causes of Death figures last week, ”the uncertainty is hindering the ability of the sector to provide support to those touched by suicide. Vulnerable individuals are at risk of losing their support networks and access to quality services. The statistics released today emphasise the critical importance of sustained suicide prevention funding.”
On Easter Thursday (2 April 2015) The Hon Sussan Ley MP announced a 12 month extension to mental health services, with frontline services a priority. Media release: Mental health funding confirmed
Suicide Prevention Australia welcomes the announcement and is now liaising with the Department to clarify funding for National Suicide Prevention Projects (NSPP). We must ensure sustained support for our most vulnerable.
