SPA CEO on Refugee Week

19 June 2017

This week is Refugee Week; the Mental Health Commission reports that refugees and asylum seekers living in Australia are particularly vulnerable to self-harm and suicidal behaviour; in their report Mental health research and evaluation in multicultural Australia: Developing a culture of inclusion they found that prolonged detention is associated with poorer mental health in refugees and asylum seekers, particularly among children.

The diversity of the refugee population is characterised by a high proportion of communities from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds; Suicide Prevention Australia will shortly release a Position Statement on suicide prevention in CALD communities which will outline a series of recommendations to address research and information gaps, and guide future investment in suicide prevention among CALD communities. Efforts to address suicide in our society must include everyone in the discussion, and the needs of the CALD community is no exception.
