SPA Media Release: Funding uncertainty causing deep unease in suicide prevention sector – Latest suicide figures released

31 March 2015

A report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that 2,522 Australians died by suicide in 2013. This remains an unacceptably high number of suicide deaths. Suicide is mostly preventable yet is once again the leading cause of death for both Australian males and females aged 15-44 years.

Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA) acknowledges the grief and loss felt by those bereaved by suicide as well as the suffering and pain experienced by those who attempt or think about suicide. “All deaths are tragic. However, to have so many Australians taking their own lives across so many age groups, is absolutely devastating whole families and whole communities,” said Sue Murray, Chief Executive Officer of SPA.
