ProfessionaLE: Using your lived experience at conferences

Whether you have attended a conference, presented at one or are just considering your options, this online session is for you. Join Lived Experience advocate Hayley Purdon in conversation with Peta Dampney, principal trainer and consultant at From Me to You Consulting to learn skills to effectively pitch your presentation to a conference organising committee. In an informal Q&A style session, we will be chatting about how to create a message worth communicating, submitting an abstract, what to expect at the conference and how to best deliver your presentation. By the end of the session, you will have the tools needed to submit an abstract and present at conferences such as the National Suicide Prevention Conference 2023. This session is the first in a series of monthly conversations to empower you to professionalise your lived experience. ProfessionaLE: Working in peer work roles

Some people say that they would like to use their lived experience to connect and support others who may be experiencing suicidal distress. This distress may be as a result of their own experiences with suicidal distress, bereavement or because they may care for someone else. One way those with a LE of suicide can connect is through Peer Work or as a Peer Care Companion. In suicide prevention having a lived experience of suicide, is recognised as an important part of what can contribute to being an effective Peer Worker/Peer Care Companion. Being able to you draw on your own experience of suicide can help to create an environment of shared experience and empower someone else to cope in a similar situation. Do you do your lived experience of suicide work online or with geographically spread teams? Do you know anyone in Canberra who is doing work like you? The nature of the way we work these days, can mean you rarely get the opportunity to meet with people face to face to chat about all things lived experience, or build a local network of people to understand the work you do. If you have a lived experience of suicide or mental health difficulties, and use your lived experience purposefully in any sector, you are invited to come to an informal public meet up to make some local connections with others doing similar work.
