The Negotiator Coordination Unit has developed a three-day training course ‘First Responder Crisis Intervention’ [QC1741_01] specifically targeted at teaching first response officers, both police and ambulance officers, improved de-escalation communication techniques when attending persons in a crisis and when attending suicide situations.
The three-day package is conducted by qualified police negotiators and Queensland Health experts and includes a variety of classroom based activities, presentations and interactive scenarios aimed at equipping participants with higher level of training in de-escalation communication techniques, improved active listening skills and basic negotiation practices. These skills will allow first responders to confidently negotiate with a suicidal person in a crisis situation until they are either relieved by qualified police negotiators, or they can resolve the situation.
