Suicide prevention leadership change
Former Industry Super Fund Chair takes on leadership role with suicide prevention peak body.
Melbourne-based, Ms Emslie has extensive experience as a Director and Chair of several organisations, most notably, she was the Independent Chair of HESTA the Industry Super Fund for nine years. She has been on the Suicide Prevention Australia Board since 2013.
Ms Emslie has strong public policy and stakeholder management expertise demonstrated through industry-wide leadership roles at both a national and international level. She also has a deep understanding of the health and community services sector having provided advisory services to the sector for nearly 25 years.
Suicide Prevention Australia CEO, Nieves Murray said, “I’m excited about this next chapter for Suicide Prevention Australia and I look forward to achieving meaningful change in collaboration with the Board, our Members and sector leaders.”
“It’s time for change. It’s time to make suicide prevention a whole-of-government approach so that all government agencies are working towards a unified action plan,” said Ms Murray.
The annual number of deaths by suicide has been increasing over the past two decades. Every year it is estimated that over 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt – this translates to more than 180 every day.
Ms Emslie said, “I have a strong desire to contribute to this serious, complex and growing public health issue.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Matthew Tukaki for his passion, dedication and leadership through a period of significant change. Thanks to his efforts as Chair, it’s a very exciting time to be taking on the leadership of the Board,” she said.
