World renowned thought leaders, academics, clinicians, community, and public health workers in suicide prevention are descending on Adelaide next week to unite the suicide prevention sector, showcase the latest research, share evidence-based solutions, and focus on saving lives.
This year’s conference marks 25 years since the peak body, Suicide Prevention Australia first started hosting these important events and we are pleased to be celebrating this milestone in the great state of South Australia, a jurisdiction that has been a true leader in suicide prevention.
Suicide Prevention Australia CEO, Nieves Murray said, “As the peak body, we are proud to be giving a voice to some of the best and brightest minds in suicide prevention and learning from innovative research over the coming days.
“This year’s theme, Collective Courage. Accelerate Impact aims to empower delegates to take meaningful action, understand the real impact of the sector’s work, and contribute to the collective efforts in suicide prevention,” said Ms Murray.
Speaker highlights
- The Hon. Emma McBride MP, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health.
- A/Prof Laura Shannonhouse, Associate Professor at Georgia State University, will connect the manifestation of social isolation, loneliness, and elevated suicidality in older adults, to the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.
- A/Prof David McDaid, from the London School of Economics will provide an overview on how economic arguments can been used to help strengthen the case for investment in policy and practice for self-harm and suicide prevention worldwide.
- Nathan Bolton, Lived Experience, Youth Mentor and Speaker, having sat on the SA Premier’s Council on Suicide Prevention, Wellbeing SA’s Community Advisory Committee for Mental Health and was the State Representative of the Special Operations Engineers Welfare Associations.
- Prof Tom Calma AO will provide the Diego De Leo Address, that recognises an individual who has exhibited exceptional leadership and strong commitment to advancing the cause of suicide prevention.
Community action and compassion will be spotlighted during the prestigious LiFE Awards Gala Dinner on Wednesday evening. The national award recipients will be announced, recognising excellence in suicide prevention.
