Accidental Counsellor Train the Trainer program

This 4-day Train the Trainer (T4T) program provides you with the knowledge and skills to either deliver the Accidental Counsellor program to your staff or set you up to run your own business training others. The Accidental Counsellor program is being requested by organisations across Australia. Your passion and expertise will help make a difference to this landscape and may provide you with an alternative career choice for your future. Accidental Counselling provides participants with the skills to talk to someone going through a difficult time; having relationship issues; not coping with life; or feeling helpless. This course will help your participants respond in a helpful and meaningful way. They will learn how to have a difficult conversation; help someone identify their strengths provide them with strategies to manage their stress and distress better; re-frame their thinking to give them a different perspective on things that previously appeared negative and unachievable. All accredited trainers will receive ongoing training support from the developers, who are qualified counsellors with many years of experience working with people in crisis or conflict.

Our Data in Practice series will take a deep dive into the Suicide and Self-Harm Monitoring System. This new, national system is the most comprehensive collation of data for deaths by suicide as well as self-harming and suicidal behaviours. World Suicide Prevention Day

This September, we are encouraging everyone to take action by getting involved in World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday the 10th. The day is observed by more than 60 countries, with the aim of promoting stigma reduction, policy change, help seeking, and remembering those we have lost to suicide, those who have attempted suicide, and those who are living with the grief of losing someone.   Almost 10 million Australians know someone who has been impacted by suicide, that’s almost half the country. At Suicide Prevention Australia we believe everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. Whether it is on World Suicide Prevention Day or any day of the year.

ProfessionaLE: Working in peer work roles

Some people say that they would like to use their lived experience to connect and support others who may be experiencing suicidal distress. This distress may be as a result of their own experiences with suicidal distress, bereavement or because they may care for someone else. One way those with a LE of suicide can connect is through Peer Work or as a Peer Care Companion. In suicide prevention having a lived experience of suicide, is recognised as an important part of what can contribute to being an effective Peer Worker/Peer Care Companion. Being able to you draw on your own experience of suicide can help to create an environment of shared experience and empower someone else to cope in a similar situation.
