Suicide Prevention Australia welcomes the announcement that the Hon. David Coleman MP will be Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
Suicide Prevention Australia has been advocating strongly that suicide prevention requires a whole-of-government approach, and so responsibility should sit within a central agency. With this announcement suicide prevention moves to the central agency of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
About the new Assistant Minister:
- Prior to his political career Mr Coleman had a background working in strategy at a number of media organisations.
- He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2013 for Banks, New South Wales.
- Mr Coleman was appointed as Assistant Minister for Finance in December 2017.
- In August 2018 he was appointed as Minister for Immigration, and took leave in December 2019 for personal reasons.
Suicide Prevention Australia looks forward to working with the Hon. David Coleman MP as we continue our advocacy for a whole-of-government approach to suicide prevention including a Suicide Prevention Act and a National Suicide Prevention Plan.
