James Bell

James has been involved with Suicide Prevention Australia for many years, formerly chairing the NSW-ACT Joint State Committee, being a member of the QLD State Committee and member of the National Policy Committee.
As Neami National’s current Director of Safety and Homelessness, he leads nationally dispersed multidisciplinary teams to provide specialist supports in suicide prevention, domestic and family violence, homelessness and youth mental health.

As a son of a Vietnam War Veteran, James grew up experiencing and witnessing the challenges and adverse impact of his father’s war time on his mental health and family unit. As a young adult, James too experienced challenges with his mental health and wellbeing. With these lived experience learnings as his compass, it inspired James to make a difference and empower individuals and communities to have a voice and achieve outcomes that matter to them.

James has a longstanding commitment to learning, demonstrated through holding post graduate qualifications in social work, leadership and management as well as tertiary qualifications in government administration and governance.

He has held senior leadership roles with both Wesley Mission and Neami National, overseeing national suicide prevention initiatives of Wesley Lifeforce, Lifeline Call Centres, suicide aftercare as well as specialist mental health services in community and residential settings.
