On Thursday 14 October 2021, the South Australian Parliament’s Legislative Council passed the Suicide Prevention Bill. This brings South Australia one step closer to having Australia’s first Suicide Prevention Act, which is key to reducing distress in our communities.
The Bill is an important piece of legislation to prevent suicide, ensure a whole-of-government focus and improve suicide prevention data, policy and practice. It follows significant work in South Australia and advocacy from our members and Suicide Prevention Australia. The Bill will now be considered by the Legislative Assembly.
Suicide Prevention Australia continues to advocate for the Commonwealth to pass a Suicide Prevention Act. Standalone legislation is an important enabler of a whole-of-government approach to and ensures all agencies and officials are focused on how to prevent suicide across the community.
This is a positive step forward for the suicide prevention sector and the communities they support across the country. Read more about our policy platform here.
