Kimberlie Dean

Kimberlie Dean from the University of New South Wales received an Innovation Grant for research titled ‘Reducing self-harm and suicidality in vulnerable prisoners: piloting a structures approach to risk assessment and intervention.’

Research Statement

Receiving this grant is important because those who find themselves in contact with the criminal justice system are particularly vulnerable to self-harm and suicidality but are a group often neglected by prevention initiatives. Attempts to develop prevention strategies in such settings are hampered by a lack of robust evidence to guide them. Given the elevated rates of self-harm and suicidality in prisons and other criminal justice settings, there is an enormous opportunity to realise significant benefits from the implementation of evidence-informed prevention strategies.
