Jen Waltmon, Lived Experience Lead, Suicide Prevention Australia
As we head into the holiday season, I’m reminded that people in our community experience events differently. This year, instead of giving physical gifts, why not consider giving the gift of connection and conversation? Reaching out to someone who might need a listening ear or a kind word can make a huge and positive impact in someone’s life.
For those of us with lived experience of suicide, we have a unique and powerful gift to share. Through storytelling, we can help others in their recovery journey and break down the stigma surrounding ill mental health, and suicide. Reaching out and reaching in can be incredibly healing, not just for those we connect with, but for ourselves as well. It’s an important reminder that we are not alone in our feelings, and that our experiences can help others in their journey.
So, this holiday season, let’s give the gift of our time, our stories, and our hearts. Together, we can create a community of compassion, support and inclusivity.
