selectability is a not-for-profit charity committed to improving mental wellbeing and reducing suicide across regional Queensland.
As one of regional Queensland’s leading providers mental health services, we provide and coordinate NDIS supports, offer clinical services, and deliver mental wellbeing, suicide prevention and carer programs. We believe everyone has the right to access high-quality supports locally and have recently expanded our services to include child safety, and residential aged care in the Lower Gulf.
selectability continues to explore innovative ways to support the mental wellbeing and suicide prevention needs of regional Queenslanders.
With suicide rates across some areas of Queensland up to 3 times higher than the national average, selectability took action and in 2022 launched Suicide Prevention Queensland.
We are working to address this unmet need by raising funds to engage and consult with communities to develop and understanding of the unique challenges they face, deliver vital services and programs to those that need it most, and develop vital training to strengthen individual and community resilience to respond to those in crisis.
selectability also currently offers mental wellbeing and suicide prevention support through its 8 Clubhouses, 6 BikeSheds, and 13 Mental Health Hubs, all of which aim to address the multiple risk factors surrounding suicide.
While there is no single solution that will prevent suicide, we know that there are many protective factors that can reduce the risk.
Communities play a crucial role in suicide prevention, through engagement with key stakeholders. Suicide Prevention Queensland works to identify gaps in services and works to reduce the risk of suicide in the regional areas that need it most.
This includes:
- conducting research and engagement with regional communities to understand unique challenges they face
- improving access to local services by leveraging existing programs and establishing new ones where they are needed
- providing GPs with a reliable referral pathway for patients in crisis
- working with community groups and those with lived experience to deliver specific projects targeted at those in distress.
Suicide prevention is everybody’s business and selectability is working toward its vision of Queensland communities free of suicide. Find out more on the selectability website.
